Zermatt Snow Report, 30 Mar 2010

ZermattThere is a depth of 169cm of snow at the top of the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and 6cm on the ground in the village.

After the recent snowfall conditions on the pistes are excellent particularly at altitude (and a lot of the resort here in Zermatt is at high altitude!).

The snow on some of the lower slopes becomes a little soft in the mid afternoon when skiing back to the village. There has been plenty of off-piste powder in the last couple of days and the areas such as Triftji which benefit from wind blown snow will be worth visiting today.

More snow is expected over the next few days with a moderate fall this afternoon (Tuesday) and a heavy fall overnight on Wednesday night. Temperatures are due to remain just below freezing even at village level to keep the snow in good condition.  The high winds should abate over the next 24 hours so with intermittent sunshine expected on Wednesday and Thursday the weather is set fair.  Wax those skis!

Thursday sees the start of the annual Triftji Bump Bash competition when some high quality mogul skiing will be on display.

Also advertised for 5p.m. on Thursday is a Sheep Mating Demonstration (!).
