St Anton Snow Report 20 Mar 2012

St Anton, AustriaApprox 15cm of new snow over the last 24 hours has brought the snow depth to 380cm on the upper runs and 135cm on the home runs.

After the 24hrs of snowfall, the conditions here are amazing. The pistes call and the clouds deliver, or so it seems!  The off piste and lower slopes were looking a little tired before Sunday, but now are freshened up and looking gorgeous again. The pistes themselves are wonderful and groomed beautifully, ready for anything! Bring on hard morning of skiing, long lunches in the sun and great après. This is what spring skiing is all about!

After the snow, comes the sun. We are looking forward to the rest of the week being absolutely beautiful to help us enjoy this week of skiing.

Not much gossip to be had here in St. A, but the Kirschbaum freestyle competition on Saturday is still the talk amongst all the staff. Finlay, one of the chalet assistants, (and my little brother coincidently) entered with a  friend and so we  all went up to watch and support: we were by far the loudest, and probably brightest, fan group! He did really well, pulling some massive 9’s (2 and a half rotations, 900 degrees in mid air) and hitting the rails and the hip. The Austrian youth freestyle team were there, they did a trick together which involved going over all the jump one after the other in really close succession, so there were 3 or more in the air at once, all doing different tricks, it was very very impressive. But from the whole day my favourite part was seeing the youngest competitor:  a 6yrs old boy in a bib only  one size, the approximate size of a 19yr boy, so this child was almost wearing a dress, it came down to well below his knees and dwarfed him, but did not stop him.
