Snowboxx Festival is coming to Alpe d’Huez
The resort will be taken over from 21st – 28th March for a week-long party on the piste! Snowboxx is coming into its third year, having had a great success in Vallnord in Andorra last year. This year, it is bigger than ever, with even more on offer and with an expected 3,000 revellers.
So what’ll be going on? The list is excitingly long and very diverse; there really is something for everyone. The festival will be taking place all over the resort, from the mountain to downtown Alpe d’Huez, from the morning ‘til the, well, next morning. During the day, ski-enthusiasts will head to the slopes to ski the day away. Alpe d’Huez is renowned for its beautiful, sunny weather and nice wide open pistes, making it an ideal location for a spring ski getaway. As they are skiing around the area, they will be able get involved with all the wide-ranging activities and events taking place on the mountain. Every day, there will be something different happening, from huge art projects and tropical tea parties, to retro freestyle competitions and a big group event at the end of the week! Two of the gondola lifts are also being converted into karaoke cabins and an ice cave full of marine-themed ice sculptures will open up. Snowboxx is literally taking over the mountain with all these fun events.
When the sun is at its warmest around 3pm, the après scene will kick off; the skis will come off and the boots will climb up on to the tables and the party will begin! Snowboxx have signed up top DJs and bands to play in various mountain bars and restaurants, most notably, La Folie Douce, new to Alpe d’Huez last season. The amazing terrace parties of the Folie Douce will keep people dancing ‘til 5pm with pounding music, MCs, dancers, performers, fireworks and champagne being sprayed over the crowd. The next place-to-be is the Taburle terrace, a 10-minute ski downhill, maybe longer, maybe shorter, depending on how many beers you have had in the Folie. Taburle is where the main stages are going to be and where the party is really going to kick off. Party people still dressed in ski gear will drink, dance and party til the sun goes down behind the mountain.
Heading into the evening, you will need to get yourself to downtown Alpe d’Huez where the late-night bars and clubs are opening for the most popular artists, like 2 Many DJs. Smithy’s, Igloo and Caves club will all be hosting nights throughout the week and I’m sure the kebab shops along that road will be ordering in extra burgers and chips for those midnight munchies.
But it’s not all about the drinking and the dancing, Snowboxx is taking après to a whole new level this year. You can watch or get involved in freestyle skills events and shows at the park, you can compete in the Retro Olympics or be a part of Snowboxx’s World Record fancy dress attempt! Back in resort, you can stroll around the market street lined with food stalls serving local alpine specialities. You should try the raclette baguette! The main street will host an array of après activities including pool parties at the outdoor pool, ice skating on the outdoor ice rink and pampering sessions at the spa. Le Sporting cafe will also be doing cocktail deals if you fancy a more relaxed après session.
With so much on offer, Snowboxx is bound to be the alpine festival of the season! Bringing together like-minded people who love snow and who love partying, I expect this is will be an even more successful year for the festival and hopefully for the resort too. We can’t wait!
