Sky High Views

Forget coaches or cars, long journeys and winding mountain roads that make you queasy. Taking the helicopter from Les Deux Alpes to Alpe d’Huez takes just minutes and gives you amazing sky-high views of the mountains. Leave the ordinary world behind and arrive feeling exhilarated and ready for anything!

We picked possibly the best day of the season to take our trip to Alpe d’Huez last week. Beautiful clear blue skies and radiant sunshine greeted us as we clambered out of the white eggs lift, to touch down on all the fresh powder from the day before. As we basked in the morning sun, waiting for our ride, we could just about see our destination in the far distance.

Suddenly the quiet whirring of the blades was audible, and in a matter of seconds, the helicopter appeared before us, whipping up a snowstorm as it landed. After a quick turnaround, we jumped aboard, and got strapped in.

As we lifted off, I said au-revoir to my stomach and we soared off the edge of the slopes at a very high speed. My senses were in overdrive as we zoomed across to the resort known as the ‘Island in the Sun’. It was an incredible feeling and a true sense of being on top of the world. I drank in the stunning scenery, grinning from ear to ear, and feeling like a millionaire!

The flight was over all too quickly, and before I knew it, we had landed. We walked out of the Altiport, clipped on our skis and skied our way down to the first lift of the day. The slopes in Alpe d’Huez were just incredible. We had a wonderful day testing out the variety of skiing on offer, as well as a cheeky beer on the piste! And after all that, we still had the helicopter back to look forward to!

The 6-day lift pass in Les Deux Alpes entitles you to a free day’s skiing in Alpe d’Huez, and vice versa. The helicopters run between the two resorts on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for the price of 70€ return per person. Make sure you book up-front as only 15 lucky people per day get to make this spectacular journey.
