Skiing bliss in snow-sure Obergurgl
If you’re on the way out for a winter holiday in Obergurgl then get ready for some amazing skiing. Nestled at the end of the Öztal the village of Obergurgl is the highest parish in the Austria at 1,930 metres and is practically snow-sure! Many people come here year after year because of its snow record and due to its picturesque location.
The ski area covers 110km of piste between Obergurgl and Hochgurgl with a mixture of runs to suit all abilities. If you are looking for a bit more of a challenge then there are lots of places where you can go off piste and be the first to make those fresh power lines.
The beauty of Obergurgl is that the pistes are so quite and the longest I’ve had to wait to get on a lift is around a minute, which was at the weekend! So you can imagine what it’s like during the week, sometimes you are the only person on a run.
The ski area caters for everyone with a lot of wide open blues for the developing beginners and intermediates, plenty of reds that provide different challenges for the more advanced intermediates and some tricky blacks that will put the advanced skiers to the test. It’s not all about the skiers though, the ski area is ideal for snowboarding especially with the addition of the snow park in Obergurgl, but more about that later.
If you are looking for something a little different while you are staying in Obergurgl then why not head over to the new snow park. Located in the trees underneath the Bruggenbodenbahn and Steinmannbahn it’s in the area of David’s Hut and right of the Nederhütte. You can get there by taking the Hohe Mut Bahn 1 or skiing down blue 6. At the moment the park had 6 different obstacles; a mixture of boxes, tubes, rails and a 5 metre kicker. It’s a great opportunity to impress everyone or to have a go for the first time as there are two routes to take, one for beginners and another for intermediates. The park is being developed all the time by adding more obstacles and more challenging routes.
There’s so much variety in Obergurgl and combined with the fact that it is pretty much snow sure and you’ll never have to queue for a lift it would be crazy not to come here!
