Whilst the snow conditions remained good throughout half term week, the celebratory week of Carnevale brought 35cm of fresh powder to the resort on Sunday. Monday’s skiing was powder heaven in the morning before coming quite chopped up after lunch. Despite snow still falling on Monday morning snow visibility on slopes was still quite good and improved hugely when the sun came out in the afternoon. Tuesday and the rest of the week is set to be warm with low wind conditions, cloudless bright days. Wind speeds upto 10kmph and temperatures to be no lower than -9oc.

Weather forecast is for bright sunshine filled skiing throughout the week, low wind temperatures and low wind speeds. Freeze-thaw is set to be the main condition expected from day to night. Cloudless nights mean temperatures could drop significantly at night. This should however make good speedy ski conditions.

Carnevale hits Arabba with festivities held at all hotels and bars in the local area. Snow shoeing continues to offer an exciting educating opportunity for those wishing not to ski on Wednesday. Wine tasting in the local wine bar accompanied by local hams, cheeses and breads continues to be popular. February 21st, 2012

Verbier, Switzerland5cm of snow fell yesterday bring the upper slopes on Col de Gentianes to 265cm and the resort level to be 39cm.

It is a wonderful week to be skiing in Verbier, milder temperatures and bright blue skies following fresh snowfall over the weekend mean that the slopes are in superb condition. The 4 Valleys 410km of piste seem as quiet as ever despite the extra skiers who have arrived for the French and Swiss school holidays making Verbier a fantastic peak time choice! This week’s weather offers the perfect opportunity to head up to the top of Mt Fort to take in the spectacular views of the Matterhorn and Mt Blanc whilst enjoying a rest stop at the highest point in the 4 Valleys.

We are forecast a blue bird week with temperatures between -5 and -1°C. There may be some fresh snow on Thursday which would top up the powder nicely for the rest of the week!

On Saturday 3rd March, the toboggan run at Savoleyres will be open to mountain bikers for the day. Come and watch these adrenaline junkies fly down the piste on customised bikes or for a real test, have a go yourself!

Tignes Snow Reprt, 21 Feb 2012

February 21st, 2012

Tignes, FranceMore snow fell at the weekend so slopes are refreshed and the top of the ski are has a base of 220cm and in resort there is 138cm.

Sun Sun Sun! The promise of more snow came true over the weekend with 5cm of fresh powder falling in resort level and even more on the upper slopes. This made for beautiful fresh powder adding to the already fantastic conditions around resort.

Conditions for the next few days are expected to be nonpareil. The powder will be beautifully bashed making the resort flat for the first few hours of the day with the top surface breaking up over time to produce powder drifts and lots of small bumps on piste.

The added powder in resort has freshened up all runs, but more specifically the more difficult runs in resort. All runs down to Tignes Le Breviere have loads of snow allowing these pistes to easily deal with the added traffic in resort.

The Tignes Snow park is till expanding with a new placed box over the top of the store shed in the park. The pisteurs are in the process of building the black kickers in resort for the most adventurous skiers/snowboarders to have a go on.

More sunshine over the next few days with temperatures in resort forecast to rise to about freezing level. This gives the perfect opportunity to work on your goggle tan.

The local school have put together a production called “Leds Nikis”. This shall be performed on the snow front in Tignes Le Breviere both at lunchtime or early afternoon. This could provide a nice change to the normal quick lunch in resort experienced by most.

February 21st, 2012

Ischgl, AustriaA good dump on Sunday has freshened up the area and the top of the area has a base of 220cm and runs into resort have 100cm.

What a great week for some on piste action! With over 230km of piste now in perfect order the conditions on resort could not be better for the peak of the season, the park has now been totally shaped and every run is looking perfect, with the Alp Trida runs proving very popular right now and with clear skies and sunshine for the next few days the view from the Greitspitz peak is positively breathtaking.

Temperatures have now picked up compared to the last few weeks of -15! After some fresh snowfall over the last few days we are now looking forward to glorious sunshine today and tomorrow with another light snowfall predicted for Thursday, on what will be one of the best weeks of conditions this season, time to grab the sun cream!

Avoriaz Snow Report, 21 Feb 2012

February 21st, 2012

Avoriaz, FranceThe recent snow has nicely topped up the pistes after the cold snap and the upper slope sof the Portes du Soleil now have 290cm and at resort level there is a base of 250cm.

A particular favourite this week was the “home run” this is actually a combination of pistes that runs right from the top of Avoriaz, all the way through to the bottom of the Prodain, just above Morzine. It is a combination of blue and reds, starting off with the Stade d’Arare; a swooping vast open piste which turns into a lovely and picturesque tree run finishing with the Crot. There are a variety of routes on the way day including a black so you can adjust the difficulty level accordingly.

On my day off last week I finally managed to ride the “Croix Des Combes” This is a cross country route which starts at the top of the Fornet lift and ends all the down near the bottom of Pointe De Nyon and Morzine. It is a 12 km run, starting off with interconnected powder fields and finishing in an amazing tree run. With the recent snow it seemed like the perfect time to ride this legendary off piste I have heard so much about since being here and it did not disappoint! If you enjoy offpiste without the hiking, this is perfect for you and all in the knowledge that the Porte Du Soleil staff consistently monitors the area and its avalanche warning. The cross country in Avoriaz and the Porte Du Soleil are in essence unpisted piste, safe areas making off-piste accessible and giving you a piece of mind.

Weather forecast for next 3 days is for mild and clear weather with no wind….perfect! Temperature hovering around 0 during the day.

Solden Snow Report, 21 Feb 2012

February 21st, 2012

Solden, AustriaAfter the snowfall on Sunday, which brought about 10cm, snow conditions on-piste are very good. Depth on the upper slopes is 289cm and in resort there’s 44cm on the home runs.

You don’t even have to go off-piste to find the powder! German school holidays mean that the slopes are busier than normal, which is affecting the home and linking runs later in the afternoon – they are getting lumpy with icy patches. So there is no shame in downloading in the gondola at the end of the day! The higher temperatures are making it much more pleasant skiing than the past couple of weeks and are softening up the snow, making it less hard packed and better for leaning on.

Not a cloud in the sky, here, in Sölden, and the sun is forecasted to be shining for the next couple of days – so head to the viewing platforms to make the most of the picture-perfect weather! The sun shine will bring maximum temperatures of minus 4 today and minus 2 tomorrow, but with the wind picking up a little in the afternoons, the minimum temperatures will be minus 17 today and cooler on Wednesday – reaching minus 23. So long as you’re in the sun, the sun terraces are the places to be! The cloud will start to creep in on Thursday morning and by Thursday afternoon there will some light snow. Temperatures will increase a couple of degrees as well.

Wednesday night is the Night Ski Show in Sölden and this week it’s band Neuland that will be taking to the stage. The rock band will be covering the biggest rock tunes from U2 and Police to The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lenny Kravitz. If you don’t fancy the floodlit night skiing, then you can just go for the rocking après-ski!!

If you want to continue the live music, then head to Bierhimml from 9:30pm. This Wednesday the pop/rock cover band, Mr. Nice, are performing. This Thursday at Eugen’s Obstlerhütte, a very quaint, Austrian restaurant just below Hoch Sölden, the ‘Tschirgant Duo’ will be leading the Après-ski party from3pm with a mixture of German pop and oom pah pah music.

Obergurgl Snow Report, 21 Feb 2012

February 21st, 2012

Obergurgl, Austria5cm of snow fell yesterday and the slopes are now groomed to perfection with 120cm on the upper slopes and 71cm on the lower runs.

Conditions in Obergurgl have improved dramatically over the past two days, with Monday morning’s snowfall covering many of the challenging patches exposed by last week’s wind. Much of the chewed up powder which fell on piste yesterday has now been groomed to perfection, to create stunningly smooth and ice free on piste skiing. Runs of note are as follows:

Red 17 – Due to the fact that it is one of the most sheltered runs in resort, red 17 has retained the dump of powder which fell yesterday, leaving a soft and fluffy layer of snow on piste, as well as some excellent opportunities for off piste tree runs along its edges. The trees on this side of resort have also helped to protect yesterday’s fresh powder and the whole area around the Davidshutte is in perfect condition for some sheltered powder skiing.

Blue 5/6 – This is the main run down into resort, and probably the most popular for the more laid back skiier. Often suffering from the high winds in Obergurgl, blue 6 is now in better condition than ever following the powder which fell yesterday and the lack of high winds which the resort is experiencing at the moment. This wide smooth run with its fresh layer of grippy snow has never looked better for carving and also provides an opportunity for playing in the powder which has built up along its edges.

Black 27 – As one of the higher and more exposed runs, black 27 often suffers from icy patches exposed by the wind. Today however, the snow which fell yesterday has not been swept away by high winds, and black 27 is now in stunning condition with grippy snow allowing for a speedy and comfortable descent by intermediate and advanced skiers alike.

Warm and sunny conditions today with temperatures expected to remain around -2 throughout the day. Skies set to remain clear on Wednesday with more snow expected to arrive on Thursday.

Today is the night of the Ski School show at the top of the Festkoglbahn in Obergurgl.

Expect fireworks, stunning formation skiing and breathtaking stunts from Obergurgl’s top ski instructors.

Saas Fee Snow Report, 21 Feb 2012

February 21st, 2012

Saas Fee, SwitzerlandA good 8cm fell at the weekend bringing the snow depth at the top of the ski area (at 3500m) to 345cm and runs into resort have a base of 80cm.

The recent dump of snow on Sunday provided a much needed boost to the powder level in Saas Fee. There is now a large amount of powder providing some amazing skiing both on and off piste. The off piste is superb with the perfect amount of powder to give you that feeling of weightlessness. And on piste the powder provides some superb carving, allowing you to kick up the snow.

The sunshine is continuing to shine on through the week, allowing for perfect visibility for those powdery conditions. The low wind levels also will ensure there will be fantastic skiing on powder over the entire week with no end in sight.

The carnival is drawing to a close with the last few fancy dress parties happening, including the big party in the town hall. Make sure to catch the parade and marching bands whilst you can, as carnival is not to be missed!!
