Solden Snow Report, 3 Aor 2012

April 3rd, 2012

Solden, AustriaThe upper runs of this high altitude resort have a snow depth of 290cm.

The snow above 2000m is still in very good condition. If you’re not a fan of moguls, then it is advisable to download in the gondola at the end of the day – if you fancy a work-out, though, then after 3pm the home runs will be perfect!! A few icy patches are beginning to appear on the higher slopes due to the wind, but in general skiing is still very enjoyable! The snow on the glacier is always perfect – and is still offering some powder off-piste. It’s lovely and warm in the bright sunshine, but in the shade it will feel a lot cooler.

The sun is shining here in Sölden, but the wind will pick up and the clouds will close in by this afternoon and bring some light snow. This will continue overnight and into Wednesday and Thursday. By Thursday morning the sun will be intermittent with some snow showers and the snow will become heavier in the afternoon. It is forecasted to bring 5cm of snow overnight and the light snow will continue in Friday. Temperatures are staying relatively mild and the wind will stay light. At resort level temperatures will reach highs of 11 degrees Celsius.

It is the Easter holidays, so town has busied up since last Week so the après-ski bars are really livening up!

For a real crazy Austrian après-ski atmosphere with more cheesy Schläger than you can possibly dance to, enthusiastic dance routines, crowd surfing and bar dancing, then Schirmbar is the place to be from 4pm!!

If you’re looking for a more chilled evening with live bands then head to club, Bierhimml on Wednesday evening from 9:30pm. Pop/rock Cover-band, ‘Mr. Nice’, will be taking to the stage and will be playing all your favourite hits.

If traditional oom pah pah music is more your thing, then the Tyrolean restaurants off of run; blue 2, including Bubi’s Skihütte and Löple Alm, have musical entertainment coming round the tables on Thursdays, complete with Lederhosen, accordions and impressive moustaches!

Alpe d’Huez Snow Report, 3 Apr 2012

April 3rd, 2012

Alpe d'Huez, FranceGood snow at the top of the ski area with 210cm and home runs have 62cm base on well-maintained runs.

The pistes off the back of signal area offer beautiful morning skiing, down Le Petit Prince and Les Vallons. Alternatively head over to Bergers and zip around the Marmottes area. During the middle of the day start heading over to the Alpette-Rousses down Les Rousses or through Oz. Bartavelles still remains one of the best new pistes in resort and Vaujanay and Montfrais offer some fantastic skiing whether it’s the blues around the Montfrais area, the wide speedy Les Chalets towards the west or the ever popular black, La Fare…still perfect despite the fact it goes down to 1200 metres even in all of the sun we have had. Later in the afternoon head up Marmottes 3 and hit some of the blues and reds closer to Pic Blanc as they remain fresh through the day.

We are expecting about 6cm of snow over the course of today with slightly cooler temperatures than we have seen so far this week. The snow forecast shows more snow tomorrow and it will be slightly cooler again. Thursday has a forecast of very light snow and similar temperatures.

Over the 4th & 5th of April Alpe d’Huez will be holding the French Grooming Machine Drivers Championship. This kicks off at 9.45 on Wednesday morning at the top of the yoghurt pots/the bottom of the DMC.

Ischgl Snow Report, 3 Apr 2012

April 3rd, 2012

Ischgl, AuatriaSnow at the top of the ski area is 150cm at the Idalp and the snow depth in resort is 20cm.

Ski Conditions Despite the gorgeous sunshine the slopes are actually in very good condition as they are being very conscientious about bashing them. In the morning the sun-softened slopes of Alp Trida are the place to be, in particular Red 66 and 76. In the afternoon the Palinkopf side is better, as more of the slopes are north facing and therefore the best bet towards the end of the day. They’ve been adding to the park again, and now there are a few more jibs in the lower one.
With the dump forecast for Thursday Ischgl will be the place to ski for the rest of the week!

Another day of sun today and tomorrow morning will give way to light snow tomorrow afternoon and 8cm on Thursday afternoon/evening, which should top up the pistes beautifully for the remainder of the week!

Sunday is Ischgl’s famous Easter Top of the Mountain concert! They’ve started moulding the snow for the stage where Tim Bendzko is all set to perform to thousands… it’s certainly going to be spectacular!

Tignes Snow Report, 3 Apr 2012

April 3rd, 2012

A good base of snow continues to cover the upper slopes, with a depth of 195cm and home runs into Tignes have 95cm.

The recent stretch of beautiful weather in Tignes continues. With divine blue skies for the last few days the resort is looking magnificent.

The snow coverage in resort is still comprehensive with all on piste runs not even showing the affects of the recent stunning weather.

Snow conditions in resort vary massively due to aspect, time of day and altitude. All slopes are to be found fairly firm in the early part of the day.

Slopes that receive a large amount of sun exposure soften very quickly to exhibit some great fun spring skiing. This is particularly noticeable on the Cyclamen slope from the eye of the needle down to Tignes Le Lac.

Slopes that receive a glancing blow from the sun are staying firmer throughout the day allowing everyone to practice some good solid carving turns. This is particularly noticeable on the slopes in the La Daille region with the Orange slope from the top of Bellevarde at 2827 all the way to 1785.

The two Glaciers in the region are holding up fantastically well still exhibiting fresh snow. Temperatures on the Glaciers are still holding very strong meaning its looking good for summer ski conditions.

Snow, snow, snow… Snowfall is forecast over the next couple of days with as much as 30cm of snow forecast over Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures are due to fall accordingly meaning any fresh powder should remain.

The Ski Club of Great Britain are putting on a Giant Slalom event underneath the Tichot lift tomorrow. This will be a massive event with multiple different ability levels. There will also be a BBQ and live music performed so even if you don’t have it in you to compete you can come along and enjoy the atmosphere.

Saas Fee Snow Report, 3 Apr 2012

April 3rd, 2012

Saas Fee, SwitzerlandAt the top of the ski area (at 3500m) the snow base tops 3 metres with 340cm and at resort level (1800m) snow coverage is still great with 47cm.

The skiing conditions at the top of the mountain are as good as anywhere around, with the Swiss pisteurs creating the perfect surface for fast skiing. With the majority of the runs open there is quite a lot of variety to be had.

This week we have a mixture of sun and heavy snow, providing a good variety of skiing conditions. About 30cm of snow is forecast to fall on Tuesday and Wednesday night, with blue skies forecast for Friday.

We have the Saas Fee snow and style show put on by the Ski School this Wednesday. This includes a torchlight descent, skiers with 3 metre long skis, skiers dressed in fluorescent bunny outfits, and one skier in a fireproof suit doing tricks with fire. If this isn’t enough to tempt you, do come along for the complementary gluhwein!!

Verbier Snow Report, 3 Apr 2012

April 3rd, 2012

Verbier, SwitzerlandSnow depth at the Col de Gentianes, the high point of the ski area, is 250cm and slopes are perfectly groomed down to resort level where the base is 15cm.

Snow clouds are gathering above Verbier and everyone is doing their best snow dance in the hope of one last dump of snow. The superb spring weather of the last few weeks has briefly subsided allowing resort staff to get the pistes back in to perfect condition.

There is still some great snow to be found, particularly early in the day; the long red run sweeping down from the Col De Gentianes to La Chaux being a perfect example. To really get the best out of the warm weather ski through till 2.30pm, stop for a late lunch and head back in to resort for some of the best après-ski in the world!

We are set for one last spring snowfall over the next few days with over 30cm of snow predicted. Temperatures will remain mild, with the freezing level at 2200m expect a little bit of rain in resort and plenty of the white stuff up the mountain!

With Easter on the way, the Verbier Tourist Board is arranging an Easter egg hunt for children up to the age of 15. Come along and enjoy the spring sunshine whilst following the clues around Verbier to find the eggs!

The Snowy Mountains are Perfect in Winter or Summer

April 2nd, 2012

For decades, the Snowy Mountains, Australia’s only alpine region, have been Australia’s favorite winter holiday destination. Nature seems to have thoughtfully placed the Snowy Mountains just about halfway between Australia’s two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, giving both sides of the mountains equally easy access to them. While the Australian summer months do not draw quite the numbers of visitors to the Snowy Mountains as the winter months do, this is steadily changing as Australians discover the magic and excitement in the mountains when they aren’t “snowy.”

The Snowy Mountains in Summer

If you love adventure and excitement, the Snowy Mountains have just as much to offer in the summer as they do in the winter. In an effort to attract summertime visitors to the Snowies, resort owners keep their lifts open in the summer so that mountain bike enthusiasts, hikers and sight seers can avoid the arduous climbs up the top of the slopes and experience them from the top down. While this is welcome news to those of us who may be a little lazy, it has also meant that the Snowy Mountains have become a summertime mountain bike mecca.

Thredbo is one of the Snowy Mountain’s most popular ski and snowboarding areas, boasting some of Australia’s steepest and longest trails. In the summer, these become downhill mountain bike trails. Some of them, such as the infamous Cannonball Run, are on the world mountain bike map as amongst the world’s steepest and trickiest. The Cannonball Run begins at the top of the mountain, at Eagle’s Nest and drops almost 2000 feet over a steep, winding, heart stopping 2 mile distance.

If more sedate mountain biking appeals to you more, then the Snowy Mountains are also ideal. There are mountain bike trails through beautiful wooded areas that link major resort centers together, making a day on the trail a combination of exercise and relaxation.

In Jindabyne, on the New South Wales side of the Snowy Mountains, you can have it all in the summer. Nestled in the foothills of the mountains, Jindabyne has a large lake for swimming, kayaking, wake boarding, water skiing or just enjoying from the shore. A relatively small village, from your Jindabyne accommodation, you can hop on your mountain bike, leave the world behind and explore the scenic foothills of the Snowy Mountains in minutes.

Mt. Kosciusko, Australia’s highest peak, is most accessible during the summer season as is one of Australia’s most popular destinations for “bush walkers” (hikers). There are two ways to get to the top of Mt. Kosciusko: the easy way and the hard way. The easy way is to take the chairlift at Thredbo to the top. The hard way is to hike it. Even the hard way is not that hard, if you’re reasonably fit and it’s so rewarding when you reach the top, look down and see Australia spread out in front of you.

The Snowy Mountains in Winter

The biggest names in ski and snowboard resorts in the Snowy Mountains are Thredbo and Perisher. Thredbo has a reputation for being for expert skiers and slightly insane snowboarders, boasting the steepest and longest runs in Australia. The Funnel Web run, named after Australia’s deadliest spider is an example of this. However, with over 50 runs to choose from, ranging from special runs for toddlers to the extreme runs like Funnel Web, there’s something for everyone at Thredbo.

In earlier years, three distinctly different ski resorts comprised what is now known as Perisher. First Guthega, Smiggin Holes and Blue Cow were amalgamated into Blue Cow and then, after the Skitube tunnel was completed in 1988, Blue Cow and Perisher became one. To this day, many skiers and snowboarders still call Perisher, “Perisher Blue,” but officially the name of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest ski resort is simply Perisher.

What Charlotte Pass lacks in size, it makes up for in snow. The highest resort in Australia, Charlotte Pass sits in the middle of a ski bowl. You can ski from your Charlotte Pass accommodation to the lift of your choice and finish a day of skiing or snowboarding at your doorstep again. In the height of winter, the only way in or out of Charlotte Pass is by over-snow transport, making it a dream destination for those who don’t like to see a solid ground for the duration of their vacation.

Rob loves the Snowy Mountains in summer and winter. There are hundreds of Snowy Mountains accommodation options to choose from, ranging from cheap but comfortable backpacker lodges to 5 star resorts. Whatever time of year you come to Australia, come to the Snowy Mountains. You’ll love them.

Val Thorens Snow Report, 28 Mar 2012

March 28th, 2012

Val ThorensThere is plenty of snow here in Val Thorens with 215cm on the upper slopes and 135cm on the runs into the resort.

For this late in the season, the pistes around Val Thorens are still in excellent condition. There is full snow coverage on piste, and plenty all around the rest of the mountain as the resort is still coated in the white stuff. Ski conditions are best in the morning, and with Val Thorens’ high altitude the majority of runs are maintaining their integrity well into the afternoon.

There will be clear and sunny for the rest of the week, temperatures increasing gradually to around 3C by Friday.

On March 27, 28 and 29 “Focus Event Prod» and “FG DJ Radio” will be hosting the “FESTI VAL THO 2012″, the first free electro festival in the Alps in Val Thorens France.

Obergurgl Snow Report, 28 Mar 2012

March 28th, 2012

Obergurgl, AustriaSnow depth at the top of the ski area is 155cm and the lower slopes back into Obergurgl have 86cm cover.

With temperatures rising gradually as the season draws to a close, lower slope in many resorts are beginning to suffer from heavy, snow in the afternoon with unwelcome green patches beginning to show through. Not so in Obergurgl.
All runs back down into the village are still covered with an excellent layer of snow.
Higher up, conditions are much as they were in mid-winter but with warmer temperatures making for a very pleasant skiing experience. Runs of note are:

Red 28 – As one of Obergurgl’s highest runs, red 28 benefits from the slightly colder air to preserve the snow. Meaning this ski run has an excellent covering of grippy snow to make for a speedy and comfortable descent.

Black 33 – One of Obergurgl’s trickier runs through the trees, its sheltered position means that it has maintained an excellent covering of snow, while some of the more exposed runs are tending to become a slightly icy. The lower section of this run also benefits from a gentle natural half-pipe.

Warm and sunny conditions are set to continue through to Friday with light snow forecast for Friday afternoon. Temperatures will hover at a pleasant 5 degrees during the day, dropping to around 0 at night.

Today is the night of the Ski School show at the top of the Festkoglbahn in Obergurgl. Expect fireworks, stunning formation skiing and breathtaking stunts from Obergurgl’s top ski instructors.

Skiing the beautiful Espace Killy area at the moment couldn’t be better. The sunshine and mild temperatures ensure for perfect visibility of the surrounding mountain lines and may well leave you with some colour on your cheeks!
