Solden Snow Report, 13 Mar 2012

March 13th, 2012

Solden, AustriaUpper slopes have a firm snow base of 310cm whilst last runs home have a depth of 23cm.

The higher you are, the more powder you will find, as the off-piste is quite crusty lower down. Glacier skiing is where you will find the best off-piste and on-piste it is always fantastic skiing. However, the snow quality on the mid-slopes is very good, and it’s only when you drop to below 1, 800m that you are finding the softer, slushier snow. With the German and Dutch half terms over, the pistes are back to normal in terms of volumes of skiers. But the runs back to resort are still getting a little churned up at the bottom. Despite the glorious sunshine, the temperatures are still staying relatively low in the ski area, staying mostly below freezing which is good news for the snow.

Wall-to-wall sunshine this week in Sölden, so find a sun terrace and work on your goggle tans!! There will be some clouds lurking around today, but they will clear by this evening and we shouldn’t see another one until the weekend! At the top of the ski area temperatures will not rise above minus 1, but down in town, it will be a pleasant 6-10 degrees Celsius. The little wind that is around today will ease off during the course of the week too, and this will be strongest at the peaks.

Lots of Austrian après-ski with live music is on offer today at various places on the mountain. If you head to Bubis Ski Huette from 1pm on Blue 2, then you can listen to the ‘3 Weinbeisser’.

Or if you’re on the Giggijoch side, then on your way down red 21, stop off just below Hochsölden at Eugen’s Obstlerhuette for some traditional live music from 3pm.

Verbier Snow Report, 13 Mar 2012

March 13th, 2012

Verbier, SwitzerlandThe Col de Gentianes, the upper reaches of Verbier, has a snow base of 260cm and depth of snow on the home runs is now 112cm.

Glorious spring weather and perfect pistes are helping this shape up to be one of the best weeks of the season so far! The conditions above Les Ruinettes are stunning, every run is perfectly groomed and the views of the Rhone Valley 1500m below will take your breath away; so whether you’re a hardcore skier or just enjoy a bit of gentle cruising, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. Stick between Attelas and Ruinettes this week to really soak up the sun or head a little bit further afield to Veyssonaz or Thyon to really take advantage of the full 4 Valleys area.

There is more good weather on the way this week, blue skies until Friday with temperatures rising slightly as the week goes on. A sprinkling of snow is forecast across the weekend which should leave the mountain in excellent shape for next week.

Between the 22nd and 25th of March, the Freeride World Tour will be coming to Verbier; held on the supremely intimidating Bec de Rosses run. The home of the “Xtreme” will again host the season‘s Freeride World Tour finals on the dauntingly steep and frighteningly jagged 500 metre rock-face. On a classic bluebird day, the 2011 event hosted 10,000 live spectators who were treated to simply the best competitive Freeriding in the world. The “Bec” never disappoints and with riders pushing the limits even further in 2012, we‘re guaranteed an epic.

Avoriaz Snow Report, 13 Mar 2012

March 13th, 2012

Avoriaz, FranceSnow at the top of the Portes du Soleil ski area has a depth of 260cm and in Avoriaz itself the snow base is 210cm.

We are starting to experience typical spring skiing with the snow being compact in the morning, this runs very quick and is better for advanced people.

Throughout the day, the snow becomes softer, these are fun conditions to ski in and what’s more you can get a tan!!

The snow is true throughout all of the runs; we still have a rather thick base throughout the Porte Du Soleil. Even areas of Morzine, that has areas that are rather low, still have enough all the way to the bottom of the pistes.

Off-piste is a difficult one at the moment, there are still areas that area accessible, however due to the extreme thawing and refreezing process, there are a lot of areas now that have a high 4 risk. You would definitely need to take a guide at the moment.

Weather forecast for next 3 days is for sunny and clear days.

The Stash Gathering is soon, on March 17-18 when the Burton team come and demo the stash and show us how it is all done. More details will be released closer to the time.

We are also looking forward to the Rock the Piste Festival 24th – 28th March.
It was its first year last year and because of the huge success it is back again!!! This involves some of the country’s biggest acts coming to Avoriaz and playing concerts for free, anywhere! There will be stages built into the pistes and also in the centre of town. People gather and literally rock on the piste, there will be bbq’s and refreshments and obviously some great entertainment!

Obergurgl Snow Report, 13 Mar 2012

March 13th, 2012

Obergurgl, AustriaHeavy snow last week has brought the snow base on the upper slopes to 135cm and the runs to resort have 70cm.

The pistes all have a good covering of snow that remains both soft and grippy all the way through the day. Where as before Red 17 and the David’s Hutte side of the resort was starting to feel worn and over-used (not to mention bare in a couple of spots!) now everything is well covered and feeling fresh every day. Red 28 remains the best run in resort, especially if you can get onto it just before lunch time; the snow is excellent there and is both fast underfoot whilst also providing enough grip to be reassuring – the perfect combination for people looking to improve their skiing!

Off-piste conditions are varied; last week’s fresh snow fell vertically meaning that areas that stay shady or are west-facing benefited and remain excellent. The drop down to Blue 6 from the Red 1 Itinerary run is particularly good.

Weather forecast for next 3 days is for sun and slowly rising temperatures through the rest of the week.

Saas Fee Snow Report, 13 Mar 2012

March 13th, 2012

Saas Fee, SwitzerlandWonderful snow conditions here with a snow base at the top of the ski area (at 3500m) now 355cm and in resort 65cm.

The sunshine is officially back, with not a cloud in the ski providing perfect visibility onto the perfectly groomed slopes. With the snow from last week still hanging about, the pistes are looking fantastic and as always are thrilling to ski on. The powder also remains in some places off piste providing that additional challenge should you feel you are up to it.

The sun is hanging about for the entire week so the skiing will remain superb. Many of the pistes will be in the sun for most of the day so ensure you’ve got your sunglasses on in this hot weather. There is also a lack of wind for the next few days so the powder will remain from the top of the mountain all the way down to resort.

The glacier downhill mountain bike race is set to take place this month. Mountain bike enthusiasts should not miss this exciting event, it is sure to be some of the most exhilarating downhill mountain biking you have seen.

March 13th, 2012

Les Gets, FranceSnow depth on Les Get’s upper slopes is 190cm and snow at the top of the Portes du Soleil ski area has a depth of 260cm.

weather is beautiful here in Les Gets and the ski conditions are a lot of fun. The Piste Bashing team is doing a wonderful job keeping the pistes in perfect condition –nice and smooth. Now all the half term weeks are over the slopes are back to their normal peaceful selves with barely a lift queue to be seen. In particular at the moment the Coupe du Monde run in Avoriaz is a lot of fun being nice and smooth with its exciting lips to fly off on the way down. The sun here is very enjoyable especially at lunch times sitting out in the sun with a good tartiflette! The bowl was in fantastic form yesterday and we all enjoyed the views of Mont Blanc from the top of the Rosta lift and the Eglantine red run down was a real buzz!

A change to the weekly events programme brings us Night Sledging twice a week, whereby those wanting to get the most out of the pistes can use the ‘magic carpet’ lifts until 7pm on a Tuesday and Thursday.

Another event this week is Ski-Joering, a traditional discipline whereby skiers are towed around the piste by a horse. This can be tried by all in Arc 2000 this week.

Val Thorens, FranceSuperb skiing to be had on slopes with a great snow base – the upper runs have 235cm and the lower 155m.

The pistes are open, wide, long, not too busy and incredibly well groomed – perfect for long carving turns that will put a smile on your face for a very long time. The views are amazing. The snow is reliable. The off-piste is everywhere. And this is pretty much all a skier needs.
