St Anton Snow Reports

St Anton Snow Report, 3 Apr 2012

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

St Anton, AustriaThe snow depth at the top of the St Anton ski area is 345cm on the upper runs and 110cm on the home runs.

The snow down here in resort at the moment is firm in the mornings and a little heavy in the afternoon: perfect for early mornings and early après! The sunshine means we are getting to appreciate the absolutely stunning views that are around every corner here on the Arlberg, my favorites being the view from Valluga (the obvious one) and coming down run 17, because by the time you are at the bottom, you are in the view that you were looking at from the top. Stuben and Rendl are really coming into their own in terms of snow quality, they are less busy so giving you the space to turn, without fear of hitting someone, and generally without the mogul fields which are found on the Nasserien side of the mountain.

Hooray!! We are due more snow tomorrow afternoon, night and also on Thursday morning.

The boys (and some of the girls) in our staff team are spending more and more time in the park. The back flips are getting bigger and the spins even speedier. I just chill out up there, on the beach, taking photos of other people doing these daring things!

St Anton Snow Report, 28 Mar 2012

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

St Anton, AustriaSnow at the top of the ski area has a snow depth of 365cm and runs into resort have 120cm.

We had a sprinkling of snow on Sunday morning, a gentle dusting across the slopes.

The weather is absolutely stunning this week, pure blue skies, every single day. The snow is good, especially high up, like at the top of schindlergrat and valluga. For other good pistes that are a little lower down, but still good, stuben and St Christoph are good in the afternoons. The heavy snow means that you definitely deserve your lunch by the time it comes around, and there is nothing better than eating a well deserved lunch on the mountain, enjoying the beautiful sunshine and gorgeous views.

More sun for the next two days and then the possibility of more snow on Friday!!

The spring is definitely here, every lunch time the goggles are off , the sunglasses are on and as much skin out as people dare to bare. Rendl beach is becoming more and more beach like. People sit there for hours watch not waves and swimmers but jumps and skiers. Music, picnics, snow-chilled beer and some good entertainment pretty much sums up Rendl at the moment.

St Anton Snow Report 20 Mar 2012

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

St Anton, AustriaApprox 15cm of new snow over the last 24 hours has brought the snow depth to 380cm on the upper runs and 135cm on the home runs.

After the 24hrs of snowfall, the conditions here are amazing. The pistes call and the clouds deliver, or so it seems!  The off piste and lower slopes were looking a little tired before Sunday, but now are freshened up and looking gorgeous again. The pistes themselves are wonderful and groomed beautifully, ready for anything! Bring on hard morning of skiing, long lunches in the sun and great après. This is what spring skiing is all about!

After the snow, comes the sun. We are looking forward to the rest of the week being absolutely beautiful to help us enjoy this week of skiing.

Not much gossip to be had here in St. A, but the Kirschbaum freestyle competition on Saturday is still the talk amongst all the staff. Finlay, one of the chalet assistants, (and my little brother coincidently) entered with a  friend and so we  all went up to watch and support: we were by far the loudest, and probably brightest, fan group! He did really well, pulling some massive 9′s (2 and a half rotations, 900 degrees in mid air) and hitting the rails and the hip. The Austrian youth freestyle team were there, they did a trick together which involved going over all the jump one after the other in really close succession, so there were 3 or more in the air at once, all doing different tricks, it was very very impressive. But from the whole day my favourite part was seeing the youngest competitor:  a 6yrs old boy in a bib only  one size, the approximate size of a 19yr boy, so this child was almost wearing a dress, it came down to well below his knees and dwarfed him, but did not stop him.

St Anton Snow Report, 13 Mar 2012

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

St Anton, AustriaSnow depth at the top of the ski area is still an amazing 385cm whilst lower runs to resort have 145cm.

A brief dusting fell on Sunday as we all prepared for our new guests was good, it added just a touch of freshness to the snow.

The snow that fell heavily last week has kept well on the piste, despite the warm weather. The lower slopes are getting a little slushy in the afternoons, and therefore also bumpy, but this newfound snowboarder loves it. What I never realised as a skier was how much fun real spring skiing can be as a snowboarder. Banking up against one mogul after the other can be almost like a mini boarder-cross. The higher up and quieter runs are still lovely, so if you are heading out here soon, I would suggest a trip right up Valluga, and definitely at least half a day on the West side of Zurs.

This week it looks like we are going to have amazing weather, especially for fair weather skiers and those wanting to improve on their goggle marks. Sun, sun and more sun with temperatures forecast to not be too high, so the snow will stay, and the sun will shine, I cannot wait!

St Anton Snow Report, 9 Mar 2012

Friday, March 9th, 2012

St Anton, AustriaSnow depth at the top of ski area is 390cm, having been supplemented by the 3cm of snow yesterday and in resort the depth is 155cm.

An amazing bright sunny clear day here in St Anton, after yesterdays light snow showers this has created perfect ski conditions and less chance of icy patches with the new fresh snow. Sun cream and shades needed today!

Weather forecast for next 3 days is for clear skies today and tomorrow with more snow forecast for Sunday.
We are looking forward to the Kirschbaum Battle Slope style Contest up at Rendl Beach on 17th and 18th March.

St Anton Snow Report, 6 Mar 2012

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

St Anton, AustriaIt snowed yesterday and last night, approximately 5cm in the village and more on the mountain so the upper slopes nearly reaching 4metres with a depth of 390cm and in resort there’s 155cm.

It was still snowing this morning when I got up and although it has stopped now, we are due to have snow showers all day.

All of the runs on the Arlberg are open.

Goodbye sunshine, hello more snow! The sun has gone, and with it the warmth that, while lovely for sitting out in at lunch, would of taken all our snow had it lasted much longer! Now this cooler weather has moved in and we are getting more snow again, which can only ever be a good thing! The runs are feeling much better for a fresh covering of snow, especially the lower down ones, and the higher up ones just got even better. Unfortunately I seem to of cracked a rib this weekend, so I shall be making best use of these snowy days in the outdoor (but definitely heated) swimming pool here in St Anton, until the temptation to go boarding or skiing gets too much for me (possibly tomorrow with this new snow, and the sun that is due!).

More snow forecast for this evening and then the sun is doing the Hokey-kokey for the rest of the week, we shall see it tomorrow, then not on Thursday, and then it’ll be out again on Friday. We also have 10 cm of snow due on Thursday this week.

We are having a rather quiet week here in St Anton, all except the children, who have just walked past, in file, singing about Tarzan and Jane on their way to ski lessons. There are a few big events in the upcoming weeks, not least the Kirschbaum park competition. St Anton is the freeride heaven of the alps due to the fun that can be had here both in the park and all over the rest of the mountain. The Kirshbaum competition (or battle) is all about ‘going big or going home’, and promises to be a highlight of the month, but it’s not for another 11 days so i shall contain my excitement until closer to the time.

St Anton Snow Report, 02 March 2012

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

St Anton, AustriaStill a massive amount of snow on the upper slopes with 410cm and 160cm on the home runs to resort.
Sunday was our last snowfall, it wasn’t huge, but it was enough to keep the snow good through this whole week of sunshine.

The weather here has been stunning, beautiful blue skies every single day, from dawn until dusk. We’ve seen amazing sunrises and sunsets and, despite the sun cream, all have the beginnings of goggle tan lines! This has obviously had its downside, the warmth isn’t always good for the snow, however, yesterday saw me taking a group of guests all the way across to Lech and Zurs, where the snow has stayed beautifully, especially at the top of red 10 in Zurs. Even here in St Anton the snow has been remarkably good, only the lower slopes are a little slushy, but it’s good fun, light and movable slush, excellent for boarders!

Today is going to be our last day of brilliant sunshine until next week. The warm weather is leaving us for a while, to be replaced with four days of snow on the mountain. (yey!)

Half term being over now means we shall have emptier slopes and less queuing at the lifts in the morning, more space to carve and turn without having to look over our shoulders every moment! Thankfully for me, because as a confirmed snowboarder now, other people on the piste scare me silly!

This Sunday we look forward to the Galzig cup (the 43rd one to be precise) which is a race that goes from the top of the Galzig lift, right down to the bottom. Everyone is allowed to enter, giving guests, seasonaires and locals the chance to compete against one another.

St Anton Snow Report, 28 Feb 2012

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

St Anton, AustriaAfter several cm of snow on Sunday there is now a whopping 465cm lies at the top of the Valugga with 165cm of snow on the lower resort runs.

The skiing in resort is very, very good at the moment, the snow we had on Sunday has topped up all those areas that were getting a little thin, and to make life even more amazing, the sun has come out, and is planning on staying out all week. The pistes are soft and smooth, perfect conditions for this time of year, good easy warm up skiing in the morning, and then there a few moguls to be found after lunch, if that’s what you like! Despite the fact that some of our nearby countries are on school half term, the slopes are surprisingly empty.

This stunning blue sky that I can see right now, is supposed to be staying with us all week, so get out the sun cream, get out those goggles and start working on that goggle-tan.

The resort as a whole is still very lively and buzzing with it being half term is a few neighbouring countries, the locals have all been coming up a lot as well and mainly, as far as I can tell, been hanging out in the snow park. The snow park is looking amazing, the big black jumps have been made, which are massive. We even have a few staff members who are rather good at the spinning flipping, flying thing, but not me: I prefer to sit and Rendl beach with my gluhwein and just watch them all.

St Anton Snow Report, 24 Feb 2012

Friday, February 24th, 2012

St Anton, AustriaAn incredible depth of snow lies on the upper slopes – a massive 495cm! Snow depth in resort is 170cm.

The skiing here in St Anton is excellent, the snow is keeping very well and the pistes are looked after beautifully. All 225km of piste are groomed and ready to go. Blue 17, is still my favourite run, the snow is still fantastic there, with a wide sweeping run like that, there is nothing better than carving all the way down. The other run which holds my heart is the Kandahar, also known as Black 2, which, now that there are fewer moguls on it, is a really superb black. Steep and wide, there is enough room for everyone there, and still enough snow for it to be hugely enjoyable.

We have perfect blue skies today and hopefully tomorrow too, the weather is beautiful! And in case you were worried about the snow, never fear: we are getting a top up of snow on Sunday and Monday, ready for our new guests!

This week is Fashing, which is a carnival type celebration for lent. We have had a market on the main street and lots of people dressed up as different things. We all overdosed on pancakes on Tuesday and have spent the rest of the week trying to burn them off, and lots of people have given up chocolate, sweets and such.

St Anton Snow Report, 17 Feb 2012

Friday, February 17th, 2012

St Anton, AustriaHeavy snow fell all day in St Anton on Wednesday producing a whole foot of fresh snow out on the slopes! The upper slopes now have an amazing 515cm and in resort 175cm.

Visibility has now improved so its time to get out on the slopes while the powder is still fresh. Not all the lifts open today as so much snow has fallen but still plenty of choice out there as the Arlberg ski area is so huge.
Clear skies are forecast today and tomorrow with more snow forecast for Sunday. Temperatures will be milder than of late with lows of -6.

4 Elements public photo and film shooting is taking place at Stanton park today!!. This month sponsored by O’Neill. Get yourself up to the top of Rendel for some live action in preparation for the Kirschbaum battle taking place next month.
