Solden Snow Report, 21 Feb 2012

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Solden, AustriaAfter the snowfall on Sunday, which brought about 10cm, snow conditions on-piste are very good. Depth on the upper slopes is 289cm and in resort there’s 44cm on the home runs.

You don’t even have to go off-piste to find the powder! German school holidays mean that the slopes are busier than normal, which is affecting the home and linking runs later in the afternoon – they are getting lumpy with icy patches. So there is no shame in downloading in the gondola at the end of the day! The higher temperatures are making it much more pleasant skiing than the past couple of weeks and are softening up the snow, making it less hard packed and better for leaning on.

Not a cloud in the sky, here, in Sölden, and the sun is forecasted to be shining for the next couple of days – so head to the viewing platforms to make the most of the picture-perfect weather! The sun shine will bring maximum temperatures of minus 4 today and minus 2 tomorrow, but with the wind picking up a little in the afternoons, the minimum temperatures will be minus 17 today and cooler on Wednesday – reaching minus 23. So long as you’re in the sun, the sun terraces are the places to be! The cloud will start to creep in on Thursday morning and by Thursday afternoon there will some light snow. Temperatures will increase a couple of degrees as well.

Wednesday night is the Night Ski Show in Sölden and this week it’s band Neuland that will be taking to the stage. The rock band will be covering the biggest rock tunes from U2 and Police to The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lenny Kravitz. If you don’t fancy the floodlit night skiing, then you can just go for the rocking après-ski!!

If you want to continue the live music, then head to Bierhimml from 9:30pm. This Wednesday the pop/rock cover band, Mr. Nice, are performing. This Thursday at Eugen’s Obstlerhütte, a very quaint, Austrian restaurant just below Hoch Sölden, the ‘Tschirgant Duo’ will be leading the Après-ski party from3pm with a mixture of German pop and oom pah pah music.

Obergurgl Snow Report, 21 Feb 2012

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Obergurgl, Austria5cm of snow fell yesterday and the slopes are now groomed to perfection with 120cm on the upper slopes and 71cm on the lower runs.

Conditions in Obergurgl have improved dramatically over the past two days, with Monday morning’s snowfall covering many of the challenging patches exposed by last week’s wind. Much of the chewed up powder which fell on piste yesterday has now been groomed to perfection, to create stunningly smooth and ice free on piste skiing. Runs of note are as follows:

Red 17 – Due to the fact that it is one of the most sheltered runs in resort, red 17 has retained the dump of powder which fell yesterday, leaving a soft and fluffy layer of snow on piste, as well as some excellent opportunities for off piste tree runs along its edges. The trees on this side of resort have also helped to protect yesterday’s fresh powder and the whole area around the Davidshutte is in perfect condition for some sheltered powder skiing.

Blue 5/6 – This is the main run down into resort, and probably the most popular for the more laid back skiier. Often suffering from the high winds in Obergurgl, blue 6 is now in better condition than ever following the powder which fell yesterday and the lack of high winds which the resort is experiencing at the moment. This wide smooth run with its fresh layer of grippy snow has never looked better for carving and also provides an opportunity for playing in the powder which has built up along its edges.

Black 27 – As one of the higher and more exposed runs, black 27 often suffers from icy patches exposed by the wind. Today however, the snow which fell yesterday has not been swept away by high winds, and black 27 is now in stunning condition with grippy snow allowing for a speedy and comfortable descent by intermediate and advanced skiers alike.

Warm and sunny conditions today with temperatures expected to remain around -2 throughout the day. Skies set to remain clear on Wednesday with more snow expected to arrive on Thursday.

Today is the night of the Ski School show at the top of the Festkoglbahn in Obergurgl.

Expect fireworks, stunning formation skiing and breathtaking stunts from Obergurgl’s top ski instructors.

Saas Fee Snow Report, 21 Feb 2012

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Saas Fee, SwitzerlandA good 8cm fell at the weekend bringing the snow depth at the top of the ski area (at 3500m) to 345cm and runs into resort have a base of 80cm.

The recent dump of snow on Sunday provided a much needed boost to the powder level in Saas Fee. There is now a large amount of powder providing some amazing skiing both on and off piste. The off piste is superb with the perfect amount of powder to give you that feeling of weightlessness. And on piste the powder provides some superb carving, allowing you to kick up the snow.

The sunshine is continuing to shine on through the week, allowing for perfect visibility for those powdery conditions. The low wind levels also will ensure there will be fantastic skiing on powder over the entire week with no end in sight.

The carnival is drawing to a close with the last few fancy dress parties happening, including the big party in the town hall. Make sure to catch the parade and marching bands whilst you can, as carnival is not to be missed!!

Les Gets Snow Report, 21 Feb 2012

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Les Gets, FranceHaving snowed all day on Sunday the ski conditions are fantastic with snow depth at the top of the ski area now 230cm and in resort 115cm.

All over the mountain the pistes have been beautifully groomed. In the morning they are a corduroy heaven and by the afternoon the slopes are all still lovely and flat bar a few that turn into fun mogul runs. The snow parks are in perfect condition too with the airbag on Mont Chery now open 4 days a week. Charlie Boardman was spotted on the Chavannes earlier in the week having fun on the pistes and enjoying the sun with us.

The sun is definitely making us all feel very happy at the moment and with the temperatures still nice and cold the skiing really couldn’t be better. It’s the snow carnival today so we are going to take part in the parades and going to watch the fireworks tonight at the bottom of the pistes. The torch lit descent was great last night too with the ESF instructors showing off their finest skills. Later this week we are looking forward to more music and torch lit descents in the village so there is lots of fun to be had.

The weather is going to be beautiful over the next few days there are big sunny days coming up and with temperatures hovering around zero the conditions really couldn’t be better. Also with little wind even when we have a cold snap it is still going to feel lovely and warm on our faces.

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Val d'Isère by night15cm of snow fell on Sunday through to Monday morning leaving a depth of snow of 220cm on the upper slopes and 160cm around the resort.

Ski conditions could not be better at the moment! The recent cold front from Eastern Europe has passed, and the temperatures on the mountain have risen, providing excellent opportunities to relax outside on a deck chair at one of the many mountain top restaurants throughout the Espace Killy. The recent top up of snow over the weekend has left the pistes in a fantastic condition. Now is a perfect time to experience zone tranquile, an area dedicated to relaxed skiing on gentle green runs, beginner and advanced skiers can both enjoy the laid back skiing offered by this part of the ski area. At the other end of the scale, anyone looking for a more extreme challenge should investigate the Toviere to Le Chevril off piste guided tour. This is an opportunity to take advantage of the excellent powder skiing conditions currently available, as well as instruction on off piste awareness and a helicopter ride back to resort!

Weather forecast for next 3 days is for Sun, Sun and more Sun! Temperatures will remain just below zero, so the snow will stay in good condition.

ESF will be putting on their spectacular show this week, involving fireworks, DJs, a freestyle demo and a torch lit descent of the face by all the ESF instructors in resort. This show is great fun for all ages and is definitely not one to be missed! (And of course, there will be free vin chaud and hot chocolate being served throughout!)

The views of the valleys and the Mont Blanc clearly visible from the top of the Col De La Chal peak are amazing and this great weather is set to continue throughout the week and weekend.

All lifts and pistes are open in the area so there is no shortage of runs and fun to be had. We had a few flutters of snow on Sunday which refreshed all the snow on and off the pistes creating lots of untouched areas for more adventurous skiers and boarders.

The pistes around the Peisy Vallandry area are amazing at the moment, the wide motorway pistes offering some of the best snow whilst being surrounded by the trees. With fresh powdery patches but also more compact runs for skiers who like to carve.
