Now for the latest installment from our skier poet Jack Pinnock
The origins of Mike Tyson’s boxing career, according to word on the street, can be traced back to an incident in downtown New York when a bigger child pulled the head off one of his pet pigeons. Bizarre. However, not quite as odd as the internet’s attempts to explain the humble beginnings of skiing. Nordic and Asian hunter gatherers lashing themselves to the monstrous bones of bygone beasts and the exotic extinct; Viking warriors and scouts ambushing rival clans in the Scandinavian wild; our old friend Harald Hardrada gambling on races and ice jousting in the merry 11th century. Who on earth knows. Whilst short on exact details, we must pay homage to the intrepid, fur-shrouded and bloodthirsty skiers of old, whose forays into the ancient wild evolved into the past-time we know today. Standing under the bluest of Alpine skies, timeless and alluring, it matters little. Carpe diem.
