Après at the Nederhütte, Obergurgl

Renowned for being one of the best Après-Ski bars in all of the Alps, the Nederhütte in Obergurgl has everything you could want after a great day of skiing including traditional Tirolean food, local Schnapps in abundance and lots of dancing on tables!

Start off the evening with a hearty Austrian meal, my favourite being the Kässpätzle, which is a cheesy pasta-based dish served in a pan with onions and bacon (I’d recommend sharing between two, they don’t hold back on the portions), then relax with a couple of Steins of beer while your food coma goes away and enjoy the calm before the storm when the local band Die Nederlumpe start their set. They play the most eclectic set I’ve ever heard, with old classics like Sweet Caroline and Is This The Way To Amarillo and then some great German songs like Hey, wir woll’n die Eisbärn sehen and So ein Schöner Tag (complete with dance moves).

As soon as you’ve finished a drink one of the waiters will be there to offer you another beer or a round of Schnapps served in brandy glasses and brought to you on a long wooden plank – a tip from us; if you get up and dance when the band first ask you to you’ll get a free Schnapps!

As their set is in full swing they encourage everyone to get up and dance on the tables, so balance is an essential skill, as dancing on a table in ski boots whilst holding a beer can be a bit of a challenge.

Every glass of schnapps comes complete with a little flag on a cocktail stick and the Neder tradition is to stick them in the lampshade above your table; bonus points for anyone who can collect one from every country!

Once the band have finished playing and you’ve finished sampling every flavour of schnapps that’s on offer, it’s time to head back down the mountain. The home run ‘Blue 6’ is floodlight so if you’re feeling up to it skiing home is an option, but if for whatever reason you’re not feeling up to it there is a skidoo taxi service on offer to take you back without risk of injury.

With everything kicking off in the afternoon and finishing around 7:30, you’ll even be able to get a good night’s sleep so you’re fresh for a full day of skiing the next day. What’s not to love?!
