Val Thorens Snow Report, 03 Feb 2012

Val ThorensSnow depth on the upper slopes of the ski area is now 260cm and in resort the home runs have 180cm.

The weather this week has been far more varied than it has over the last few. And the pistes have been thick with skiers and snowboarders, come snow or shine. The heavy dump of snow at the weekend was not as large as was expected and the snowfall spread itself out throughout the week for a change. With this steady flow, the management of the snow has been very efficient and the pistes have benefited hugely from a frequent dusting. Moreover, with a drastic drop in temperatures, the freezing cold air has kept all the fresh snow dry and light in most places and this beautifully soft stuff is a delight to ride. The off piste conditions have been unmatched with perfect powder, especially in the valleys of Orelle between Grand Fond and Rosael lifts.

Popular mid-level blue pistes such as Plein Sud and Tête Ronde are currently nice and soft and their powdery slopes are littered with moguls of various sizes which can be great fun to navigate. Both also offer excellent off-piste areas and nipping on and off the slope or sourcing lips in the snow from which to get some air on these runs is extremely fun. Similarly, the Dalles run from the top of the Cascades chairlift is an exciting descent suitable for a wide range of abilities.

The weather is set to be clear for the next three days and nights, giving great sunshine. As with much of Europe, temperatures will be extremely low with a maximum of -14C on Sunday.

Local news/events and gossip!

It is going to be an exciting week in terms of ski events with two Skicross European Cup qualifications and finals, the first on Wednesday and Thursday and the second running throughout Friday at the Boardercross.

The Skiing in Val Thorens

Val Thorens is known for having one of the most up-to-date skiing lift systems in the world, with a huge uphill capacity that can whisk you quickly and comfortably to the top of the many peaks and glaciers that surround this ski holiday resort, including eight skiable peaks or passes over 3000 metres! Being so high, snow is guaranteed here, and the resort has one of the longest ski seasons in the Alps.

There are nearly 150kms of pistes in Val Thorens Valley alone, and the big skiing holidays attraction of course are the links with the neighbouring Méribel and Courchevel valleys, with 600kms of pisted skiing in all, plus limitless off-piste areas.

Beginners are well cared for here, with numerous easy village slopes, and after a few days' tuition will soon be moving up the mountains to higher altitude to ski blue runs.

With the full area pass intermediate skiers can easily make it over into Méribel valley and beyond to Ski Courchevel, for a fantastic full day round trip. If you don't want to go that far, then the blues and reds around Les Menuires and St Martin de Belleville are just as enjoyable and generally less busy.

Advanced skiers are spoilt rotten, with steep blacks, plentiful powder at this altitude, and bump ski runs all over the area, including the famous run from Cîme de Caron at nearly 3200m. Snow Boarders have a dedicated snow-park near the Funitel lift.
