Val d’Isere Snow Report, 10 Feb 2012

Val dIsère, FranceCold temperatures have ensured that the snow conditions on piste continue to be excellent with 200cm of snow up top and 130cm around resort level.

Espace Killy is being bathed in sunshine this morning, providing perfect conditions for those catching the very first lifts. With the pistes in perfect condition at this time, taking on the ‘Face’ is surely a must for all those who know of its legendary status. But it is not only one of the world’s most famous runs that is benefiting from the good conditions this season; all over the resort we have the same perfection.

Arcele, on the Solaise, is a particular favourite as it is a long wide red run where you can practice those long carving runs. This runs parallel to the black Marmottons with its challenging moguls for those who have strong knees. This allows all levels within a group to enjoy their skiing whilst being able to meet back up within a few minutes.

Good news for all those who like fantastic views and a blast down from 3456m as the Grand Motte cable car has now reopened! Un-skied for the majority of the season the snow conditions are fantastic. Be one of the first to get your skis on this snow!

Weather forecast for next 3 days is for sunny skies, low winds and low temperatures!

The rumours of the appearance of James May, one of the Top Gear presenters, came true. He was seen by our guests burning up the Face and back down at top speed. For those who know the Face this must surely have been a heart stopping moment for James.

The Skiing in Val d'Isere

The world-famous Espace Killy ski area links Val d'Isère with Tignes, connecting some of the highest peaks of the Savoie Alps. The skiing is never-ending; snowfalls are reliable and the areas six-month season, starting in November, is one of the longest in Europe.

La Solaise, Le Fornet and Bellevarde make up the interlinking local ski area with an excellent connecting free ski bus. A choice of lifts lead up to the Solaise, with its infamous bumps, or the new gondola at Bellevarde and its challenging 'Face'. These offer good skiers over 1,000m of tricky skiing back to the resort, although there are also many runs to cruise between and behind the two peaks throughout your Val d'Isere skiing holidays.

Behind the Solaise is the Pissaillas glacier, with its excellent powder, from where you can cruise down to the pretty hamlet of Le Fornet (home to our Chalets Bonnevie, Bonneval Pomme de Pin and Le Bandire) for an inviting lunch. In the other direction, you can connect to Tignes, using the express Funival lift. Above here, a further world of variety rises up to 3,500m on the Grand Motte and down to 1,500m at Les Brevières - another atmospheric lunch stop.

Our Chalet Hotel Champs Avalin in La Daille offers the swiftest and simplest access to the ski area, with the funicular railway straight up to Bellevarde, plus a chair and gondola connecting to the Tommeuses and Borsat lifts, taking you up and over to Tignes. And at the end of your day, a choice of pistes in every colour lead right back down to La Daille.
